HR CONCLAVE: Shaping the New Normal: Reimagining the Future of Work, Venue: BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus. Tentative Date: February 2022
  • The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted organizations and caused human resources managers to think differently about their role as they adjust to social distancing practices and a new work environment that they may never have imagined. The Dubai Future Foundation predicts that remote working will be “the new norm” in the UAE in the long-term and that company policies will adapt to reflect the change. Prior to Covid-19, the UAE had one of the lowest remote work participation rates in the world. Ten percent of workers in the country reported working from home one to two days per week, compared to a global average of 62 per cent, according to a 2019 survey by International Workplace Group. Historically, only those who were employed locally were able to obtain the required visa to work in the UAE. The UAE is now moving away from this connection between employment and visa status, which will allow individuals to work as independent consultants rather than employees. We are also seeing multinational employers reimagining their approach to the Gulf region as a result of the limitations on travel caused by the pandemic. For some, this means increasing their presence in the UAE to ensure that their business model is not reliant on regular travel into the region by staff who live overseas. Specific Themes:
    • Changing role of HR teams as face-to-face collaboration is replaced with e-mail and Telecommuting
    • Jobs of the future in GCC markets
    • Nurturing employee mental well-being and job performance
    • Cross cultural competencies and employee productivity
