About us

The Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at BITS Hyderabad strives to produce engineers of tomorrow by imparting instruction with advanced curriculum, and research methodologies in modern areas of Computer Science. The Computer Science and Information Systems department at BITS Hyderabad started admitting students in the year 2008 in B.E (Hons) Computer Science, M.Sc(Tech) Information Systems, M.E(Computer Sc), and Ph.D.(CS) degrees. From the academic 2013-14, we started offering a new program M.E(Computer Sc with specialization in Information Security) for B.Sc(Maths and Physics) graduates, to cater to the present day requirements for skilled IT Professionals in the field of Information Security. The department has a vibrant student strength of about 600. The department has a good mix of faculty with experience from reputed academic institutes and industry. The department offers a wide range of courses spanning areas like Algorithms, Theoretical Computer Science, Computer Architecture and Organization, Systems and Networks, Databases, Software engineering and Soft computing. The department lays emphasis on hands-on aspects through laboratories, computer oriented projects, research presentations to make the students industry-ready. The department consistently attracts top BITSAT scorers every year. The Department is committed to achieving high standards of excellence in academic and research activities over the coming years.

Research

The department has faculty expertise at Ph.D. level with research focus on Systems & Computer Networks, Algorithms and Theoretical Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems including databases and Computer Applications (AI, Robotics, Graphics, etc). The department has full time research scholars as well as part time research scholars. The full time scholars pursue their research in these areas with funding from BITS, TCS, UGC, DeitY, Pregress Software, Intel and other agencies. Faculty from the department have research collaboration with several universities in India and abroad. Under Graduate and  Post Graduate students participate in research activities of faculty members. The students also get research experience by visiting abroad under several fellowships like Viterbi-India and DAAD etc.

Activities

Since its inception, the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems has been organizing guest lectures from Industry and academia. Many eminent professionals from Industry have delivered talks in entrepreneurship, challenges & rewards in software engineering, quantum reality and objective semantic information etc. The department has also organized seminars and workshops on topics like business challenges in data warehousing and data mining, lean for leadership: lessons from corporate jungle, challenges in animation industry, network design and development strategies for sensor networks etc. to make them Industry ready. The faculty members from the department supervise the activities of the two student associations, CSA, and EXTEK. The department also helps students from all other streams of engineering and science in honing their programming skills by conducting hands-on training programs and certificate courses from time to time on topics like web programming, data structures, object oriented design, Android programming etc. The department helps the student members in managing the activities of the ACM Student Chapter at BITS Hyderabad Campus.

NEWS

  1. 1. Prof.G Geethakumari gave an invited talk on “Cloud Computing Security” at the Workshop on “Virtualization and Cloud Computing” organized by the UGC – Human Resource Development Centre (UGC – HRDC), JNTUH on February 14, 2019.

  2. 2. Dr. Anoop Kunchukuttan, Senior Applied Researcher, Microsoft AI and Research, gave a talk on “Machine Translation for Related Languages”, on Feb 7th, 2019. He discussed about Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) for related languages as well as about some of the useful and powerful extensions to the standard phrase-based SMT.

  3. 3. Dr. Abhaya Nayak, Associate Professor, Dept. of Computing, Macquire University, Sydney, Australia visited the Dept during January 15 – 16, 2019. He gave a talk on Trust in Context”. The talk discussed about how Spohn’s Ordinal Conditional Functions, which are used to model belief dynamics, when appropriately adapted and interpreted, can be applied to fruitfully model the dynamics of trust.

  4. 4. Dr. Jagadish Suryadevara, Global Product Architect, VOLVO Group (Construction Equipment), Sweden visited the Dept on January 2, 2019. He delivered a lecture on “Emerging Systems Landscape: From Connected Machines to Data Analytics”.

  5. 5. Prof. Sakthi Balan, Associate Professor, LNMIIT, Jaipur, gave an invited talk on “Online Social Synchrony and its Application to Detect Events in Social Media”, on December 21st, 2018.

  6. 6. Prof. G Geethakumari gave an invited talk on "Embedded System Security" at the Defense Electronics Research Lab (DLRL), DRDO, Hyderabad, on December 12th, 2018.

  7. 7. Prof. G Geethakumari gave an invited talk on “Introduction to Cloud Forensics and its Challenges”, at the Training Programme for experts from BIMSTEC Countries) Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand , Nepal and Bhutan), on November 16th, 2018 at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Hyderabad. The event was jointly organized by National Investigation Agency (NIA), Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India and CFSL, Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India.

  8. 8. The Computer Science Association of BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus won the Best Technical Association for the year of 2017-2018. We congratulate the team and wish them success in all their future endeavours!

  9. 9. Dr. Shailesh Kumar, Chief Data Scientist, Reliance Jio and Visiting Faculty, Indian School of Business, delivered an expert talk on “Evolution of AI Thinking for building Products of the Next Decade”, on 23rd October 2018. The talk was followed by a Hands-on session on “How to build AI Systems for unlimited scale”, by Mr.Shobhit Agarwal and Mr Prateek Srivastava, founders of Couture.ai and BITS Pilani graduates.

"Lightweight Code Self-verification for Internet of Things (IoT) Devices", under Indo-Dutch Joint Research Program for ICT funded by DeitY-NWO-Progress-Irdeto with a project outlay of 380, 000 Euros (INR 2.6 Crores) from July, 2015 to July, 2019. (Investigators : Prof. Chittaranjan Hota and Researchers from Vrije University, Amsterdam).
 
2.
