Professor Rambabu Kodali is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) - Pilani, Pilani Campus, Pilani, India and also “Shri S.K Birla Chair Professor” from 2nd April 2012 for a period of three Years. He was ‘Group Leader’ (HOD) of Mechanical Engineering Group from 1994 to 2010 and also ‘Group Leader’ (HOD) of Engineering Technology Group from 2004 to 2010.
He obtained his BE, MTech from MANIT Bhopal in 1980, 1984 and PhD Degree from IIT, Kharagpur in the year 1991. After submission of his PhD Thesis, he joined as a lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT, Delhi in 1990. He joined BITS, Pilani in 1992 as an Assistant Professor in the salary scale of Rs. 3700-125-4950-150-5700 and was promoted as Associate Professor w.e.f. 01/02/1995 in the salary scale of Rs. 4500-150-5700-200-6300. He also promoted as Professor w.e.f 01/02/2000 in the salary scale of Rs. 16200-450-20900-500-22400. At present he is drawing a basic salary of Rs. 75,580/- (Pay in PB Rs. 65,080 + AGP Rs. 10,500) per month.
Till date, he has 28 years of teaching / research experience, 12 years as Professor and 16 years of administrative experience as Group Leader (HOD).
His teaching and research areas are: Toyota production system, lean manufacturing, world-class manufacturing / manufacturing excellence, Flexible Manufacturing Systems, manufacturing management. He has supervised 9 PhDs and currently supervising 3. He has published around 200 papers in various international and national journals. During 2003 to 2012, he has published 55 peer reviewed research papers in international journals and 09 peer reviewed research papers in national journals, 20 peer reviewed research papers in international conferences and 13 peer reviewed research papers in national conferences. He has received three best paper awards.
He has completed 10 research projects in FMS, Computer Integrated Manufacturing Systems, World-class manufacturing, manufacturing excellence and Innovative product design. Under his leadership, the Mechanical Engineering Group achieved the distinction of being a DST-FIST supported Group (2002-2007) and UGC-SAP supported Group (2007-2012).
He has developed 6 on-campus degree programmes and 14 off-campus degree programmes at BITS, Pilani. He has developed and established the state-of-the-art FMS laboratory apart from modernizing various Mechanical Engineering laboratories at BITS-Pilani, Pilani campus, Pilani, India.
