About the Faculty:                     

Dr. Ranjit S Patil did PhD (Energy) at IIT Guwahati and worked on Circulating Fluidized Bed Heat Exchangers. Further he worked as Post Doctoral fellow researcher at ENEA Nuclear Research Centre Italy. He did research in the area of Energy & Process Heat Transfer in Two Phase Flow domain of Microtubes at ENEA. During the tenure of research work related to ENEA Italy, he has visited to France (Paris), Austria, Hungary, Switzerland. Prior PhD he did ME in Mechanical Engineering (Government College of Engineering Karad, affiliated to Shivaji University) with specialization in Heat & Power Engineering (IC Engines group) and gained a research experience through project on Energy Conservation in Indian Cement Industries at National Chemical Laboratory - CSIR Lab Pune in collaboration with B. K. Birla Group of Companies - Vasavadatta Cement Plant. He received MHRD fellowship (2004-2010) during full time ME and PhD program. He did BE at Dr. BAMU Aurangabad university with an excellent academic record and as an university ranker. Since last 23 years (including the 3 years of experience gained at state Government's sponsored Walchand College of Engineering Sangli 2001-2004), last twenty two years he is working in the field of Fluid and Thermal Engineering for research and teaching. After completing PDF at ENEA Italy, in December 2011, he joined to department of Mechanical engineering and at present, he is working as an Associate Professor in BITS Pilani - K K Birla Goa campus, Goa. He has actively worked at various administrative tasks at BITS Pilani - K K Birla Goa campus, Goa. He has developed research laboratories on CFB Boilers, I C Engines, Microchanel and Nano-fluid, Solar energy through the funds received from SERB-DST and BITS. Five doctoral students completed PhD under his guidance. He has published papers in well known - reputed International conferences held at IITs, IISc Bangalore, attended conferences held at abroad - at Imperial College London UK, Bangkok  Thiland, Krakow Poland, USA, Seoul South Korea, Dubai -UAE, Cairo & Luxor - Egypt, Spain etc. He received travel support from DST, CCSTDS (former CICS Chennai), BITS to attend the international conferences. He has published his research work in the reputed Book chapters, and Journals published by Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, ASME, IMechE, Springer, Physics of Fluids etc. Also he has worked a reviewer for research papers submitted at many reputed journals & conferences, and also worked as reviewer  for research proposals submitted at UGC, IITs; and PhD thesis reviewer for various universities.  He is recipient of INSA Visiting Scientist Fellowship award (2014-15) by Government of India and worked as visiting Scientist in summer 2014 at IIT Guwahati. He is also recipient of OPERA (Outstanding Potential for Excellence in Research and Academics) Award (2014-19) by BITS Pilani for his excellence in Teaching and Research.

6) As HoD, involved in providing consultancy to conduct the lab sessions for UG students for various laboratories during 23rd to 27th May 2022 for NIT Goa at BITS Goa campus (for which NIT paid around Rs. 1.62 Lakhs to BITS), several COVID based small projects such as development and manufacturing of Sanitizer stands, Sanitizing machine for bags etc, and other small projects such as material testing on teeth material provided by dental student, material provided by IFB India etc.

5) As HoD, I took initiative to to participate in BMW's skill next competition 2018. Received BMW Twin Power Turbo inline 4 Cylinder Diesel Engine with 8 Speed Steptronic Automatic Transmission System, Sponsored by: BMW (industry sponsored under BMW Skill Next Competition), Rs. 25 Lakhs in September 2018.

 4) DST-SERB grant has been sanctioned to develop the experimental facility at BITS Pilani - K K Birla Goa Campus. Received Grant from  DST Govt. of India (Rs. 27.66 Lakhs) for 3 years, completed in February 2019. One JRF/SRF position also has been sanctioned. Project entitled as "Computational and Experimental Investigations on Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer Characteristics of Two Phase Flow in Atmospheric Circulating Fluidized Bed Heat Exchanger with Novel Designs of Distributor Plate".

3) OPERA Award by BITS Pilani (with  worth Rs. 8.28 Lakhs for Research) in January 2015 and in May 2017.

2) ACG: Received BITS Additional Competitive Research Grant (Rs. 2.50 Lakhs) for 2 years on 4th August 2015 to perform the research work for the project entitled "Effect of Novel Design of Cyclone Separator on Heat Transfer Characteristics of Pressurized Circulating Fluidized Bed Heat Exchanger". (High Speed Computational Facility has been purchased).

 Laboratories Developed

 Multiphase Flow Laboratory has been developed to study the fluid dynamics and heat transfer characteristics of Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) Boiler (heat exchanger) and of various micro-channels using nano-fluids.

 

Research Engine Set-up for Internal Combustion Engines

 

All required euipment to do deep research have been purchased. Equipment  such as High Speed Camera, Thermal Image Camera, Data Acquisition System with NI Labview Software, Pressure and Temperature Sensors, Blower, Compressor (15 bar capacity), Cooling Tower, High Speed Computational Facility (Two Servers) for CFD Simulation work using Ansys, Mathematica, coding work using C programing language. CFB heat exchanger set-up and micro-channel test rig have been designed and developed. Some of the photographs of the laboratory are as below.

1) Dr. Vishal Vasantrao Patil(ID: 2013PHXF0505G) in the area of Alternate Fuels and Engine Modifications of CI Engines (Sole Guided since January 2014).

(Examiners for Thesis Evaluation were from IIT Bombay (Dept of Aerospace Engg) and IIT Delhi (Dept Mechanical Engg).

Thesis Defended Successfully on 7th December 2019.

2) Dr. Satish Mullya(ID: 2013PHXF0507G) in the area of Study of Molten Metal Flow and Debris Movement at Inter Electrode Gap in Micro Electric Discharge Milling Process using CFD (Co-Guided since January 2014).

(Examiners for Thesis Evaluation were from IIITDM Jabalpur (Dept of Mechanical Engg) and IIT Delhi (Dept of Mechanical Engg).

Thesis Defended Successfully on 7th May 2020.

3) Dr. Mahesh Dasar, (ID: 2015PHXF0015G) in the area of Experimental and Computational Studies on Two Phase Flow to predict Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer Characteristics in a CFB Heat Exchangers  (JRF/SRF on DST-SERB funded Project) (Sole Guided since August 2015).

(Examiners for Thesis Evaluation were from IIT Delhi (Dept of Applied Mechanics) and IIT Guwahati (Dept of Mechanical Engg & School of Energy Science and Engg).

Thesis Defended Successfully on 13th August 2021.
