He has over 19 years of teaching experience and has taught diverse courses in the mechanical/industrial engineering domains. He regularly teaches courses to the practising engineers and managers of several renowned industrial organizations including L&T, TCS, WIPRO, TATA Power, GRASIM as well as defense officers from Indian Army, Indian Navy through e-classroom mode under Work Integrated programs of BITS Pilani in addition to regular on campus students. Besides this, he regularly engages with around 8-10 industry professionals every semester for mentoring industry based projects in addition to on-campus M.E. and B.E. level dissertations, thesis and projects. He is also currently looking after student project centered Sandbox Lab and Maker's Lab. He earlier served as the founding Faculty-In-Charge of Teaching Learning Centre at BITS Pilani, KK Birla Goa Campus during 2015-16 and 2016-17 as well as Convener of Department Research Committee, Secretary of Indian Institute of Metals-Goa Chapter.
He deeply engaged with industry and worked on a major collaborative industrial research project with an outlay of INR 27.45 lakh for improvement of surface finish on steel tube drawing process with Tube Investments of India Ltd., Chennai (A flagship company of INR 380 Billion Murugappa Group). Through this project, his team has been able to make improvements to the order of 40 percent in the tube surface finish as well as draw load in comparison to the traditional processes. He has also closely interacted with Aditya Birla Insulators, Rishra, Kolkata, Bosch Packaging Technology Ltd., Goa and Bhilai Steel Plant, Bhilai through Practice School program of BITS Pilani at different times.
Varinder Singh obtained B. E. degree from Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar in the year 2000 and obtained M. E. degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, Rajasthan, India, in 2002. He completed his Ph.D. degree from BITS Pilani in 2013. His research work has appeared in leading International Journals such as JMTM (IF 8.14), IJPEM-GT (IF 4.66) IJAMT (IF 3.563), OPSEARCH (Citescore 2.6), AJSE (IF 2.807), AMPT (Citescore 2.9) and and Conferences of repute such as IEEE International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management, International Conference of Indian Subcontinent Decision Sciences Institute. He delivers engaging lectures for courses such as Reliability Engineering, Quality Control Assurance and Reliability, Statistical Quality Control, Engineering Optimization and Engineering Graphics. Besides these, he earlier taught Production Techniques, Production Planning and Control, Prime Movers as well as Thermodynamics. His areas of research address the issues in complexity modeling in industrial organizations to act as decision aid for improving lean and agile performance, improve the quality of selection decisions by reducing rank reversal problems and process improvements in tube drawing as well as welding.
Varinder Singh is also assisting in the administration of the institute as a Hostel Warden since January 2020. He also served as a nucleus member of Undergraduate Studies Division till early 2023 and was earlier a nucleus member of ARC and Instruction divisions.
