The
BITS ACM student chapter has won the award for India's best ACM Student Chapter
The BITS ACM student chapter has
won the award for India's best ACM Student Chapter for the third consecutive
time. Under the supervision of Dr. Avinash Gautam (Faculty In-charge of ACM
Chapter of BITS Pilani) and under the chairmanship of Mr. Hardik Malhotra and
Mr. Kapil Singhal, the BITS ACM Student Chapter has won the prestigious
nationwide competition. Since its inception BITS ACM Student Chapter has been
constantly involved in promoting research and development in computing at BITS
Pilani. Apart from research, the BITS ACM Student Chapter has also been working
steadily towards closing the gender gap in computing. In line with the vision
of ACM International, to promote women in computing and research, the BITS ACM
Student Chapter has put in efforts to create an ACM-W (Women) arm. The members
of the BITS ACM Chapter have been actively participating in Symposiums, Google
Summer of Code (GSoC), ACM-ICPC and other ACM India and ACM International
activities and competitions.

BITS Pilani Students Win at 'Ericsson Innovation Awards India 2016'
Three teams from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (Bits) Pilani, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Bombay and IIT-Varanasi were on Friday chosen as winners of the second edition of "Ericsson Innovation Awards India" in New Delhi.
The awards were presented by Paolo Colella, head (India region) of the Swedish communication technology firm Ericsson in association with the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT), an industry interface organisation of IIT-Delhi.
The winning teams will receive Rs. 13 lakh each towards incubating the winning projects at any IIT-approved technology business incubators.
The project by BITS Pilani team [Chandradeo Arya(2013A7PS015P), Anuj Bansal (2013A7PS100P) and Deeptanu Chaudhary(2013A7PS014P)] introduces an innovative way for human recognition using GAIT and other body features which is an unobtrusive, robust, reliable way of human recognition which provides and alternative way to the currently established system based on face, fingerprint, and iris. The final product will be a complete software solution which will require Microsoft Kinect.
India's
Official First Aid App Launched
Six students from BITS PILANI have created India’s Official First Aid Mobile Application as their summer internship project from 23rd May -16th July at Indian Red Cross Society, NHQ, New Delhi. On 30th August, the Annual General Meeting of Indian Red Cross was held. It comprised of a ceremonial session and a business session. The Ceremonial Session was presided over by the President of IRCS and the President of India Hon’ble Shri Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi and Business Session was presided over by Hon’ble Chairman of IRCS and the Minister of Health & Family Welfare Shri J.P Nadda at DRDO Bhavan, New Delhi.
Tushar Dhalwani, the leader of the team that developed the app participated in both the sessions. The app was launched during the Business Session by Shri J.P Nadda.
The user friendly App empowers one to take care of some of the basic medical emergencies. It has one tap call feature to the national emergency helpline. Moreover, it has facility to track user location using GPS of the mobile and display route to nearby hospitals in radius of 5 Km. This has been implemented using Google Maps. Gradually, Indian Red Cross shall keep updating it and make it more useful for the community.
Many other Red Cross Societies including the American Red Cross and British Red Cross have
their own First Aid App that helps their users in emergency situations. Most importantly, these apps are restricted to their own countries and are inaccessible to Indian users. Hence it becomes a necessity for Indian Red Cross to have its own First Aid app. A First Aid manual had been published by Indian Red Cross in collaboration with Belgian Red Cross. The app is a digitized version of the same. The app is free and is currently available on Google Playstore for download.
The team of developers of the app comprises of Tushar Dhalwani (Pilani Campus), Rishabh Garg (Pilani Campus), Bhuvan Gupta (Goa Campus), Akanksha Pandey(Hyderabad Campus),Shrey Bansal (Hyderabad Campus), Rahul Mittal(Hyderabad Campus).
Best Paper in 8th Annual ACM Compute 2015 Conference
Sonal Kumari, Anil Maheshwari, Poonam Goyal and Navneet Goyal received Best Paper award in 8th Annual ACM Compute-2015 Conference on "Big Data and Analytics" for presenting the paper titled "Parallel Framework for Efficient K-means Clustering".
Special Mention Poster in 8th Annual ACM Compute 2015 Conference
Jagat Sesh Challa, Poonam Goyal, Nikhil S., Sundar Balasubramaniam and Navneet Goyal received the Special Mention Poster award in 8th ACM Computer-2015 Conference on "Big Data and Analytics" for the paper titled "A concurrent KNN Search Algorithm for R-Tree"
