The department has access to various laboratories:

  • Core Physics Lab (Measurement Techniques I)
  • Advanced Physics Lab (Instrumental Methods of Analysis)
    • Optics Lab
    • General Physics Lab
    • Material Science Lab
    • Microwave Lab
    • Solid State Lab
    • Thin Films
    • Liquid Crystals
  • Central Analytical Lab
  • Observatory

Besides there is a central workshop which assists the labs in several ways by repairing the damaged instruments and producing custom-made ones for a smooth running of the labs.

Optics Lab

The optics lab is equipped with the modern experimental setups to study Zeeman effect, electro-optic in LiNiO3 and liquid crystals, ultrasonic diffraction, Brewster angle, and Brownian motion of colloidal particles.

We have developed an electro-optic experimental setup for studying the switching behavior of liquid crystals system. We have fabricated a high precision computer controlled heater for regulating the phases of thermotropic liquid crystals.

We can probe the dynamics of particles in the two dimensional plane of the order greater than 30 millisecond. The dynamics can be precisely probed at different temperatures.

Computer Facilities

The institute has switched network with fibre-optics and an 1 MBPS connectivity for the internet connections. Students are given e-mail accounts and extensive facilities for browsing the internet and are encouraged to use the computing facilities for their project work. The state-of-the-art computing facilities involve PARAM 10000 Supercomputer (parallel processing for extensive numerical jobs), 4 RISC based SMP servers, Intel based SMP servers and more than 700 Pentium machines all over the institute and a variety of printing and drafting accessories. In addition, the department has it's own computer room which has a few Pentium machines and are accessible by all the faculty members of the department.

The central computer center called 'Information Processing Center' (IPC) provides network connection to faculty offices (chambers) and various other help with regard to installation and maintenance of the computers all over the institute.

Recently department also procured 5 IBM servers each is having 12 Cores, 64 GB RAM and 4 TB Hard Disk.
