BITS Pilani Genesis and Growth
  • BITS Pilani was established in collaboration with the MIT rationale for Indian innovation within a Western framework
  • BITS Pilani was conferred the distinction of Institution of Eminence in 2020 by the Ministry of Education, GoIThe first-ever private institute to receive this status. 
  • During its glorious 58 years as an independent university, BITS Pilani has expanded beyond Pilani to four more campuses at Goa (est. 2004), Hyderabad (est. 2008), Dubai (est. in 2000) and Mumbai (est. 2021). 
  • BITS Pilani also has a large and effective continuing education programme at off-campus locations through Work Integrated Learning Programs (WILP).

R&D @ BITS Pilani

  • BITS Pilani is continuously thriving to enhance its research competitiveness by securing external research funding. 
  • The faculty members are known for their educational innovation and thrive on high-quality, productive research. 
  • The research publication metrics continue to improve vigorously in terms of both quality and quantity. 
  • A Technology Innovation Hub (TIH) on Bio-Cyber Physical Systems has been recently established under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) of DST with a grant of Rs. 125 cr. 
  • Over the last five years, the Institute has invested over 200 crores in promoting research, towards laboratory infrastructure, consumables, student fellowships and centres of research excellence to bring in greater collaboration for deeper impact.

 Innovation @ BITS Pilani 

  • Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship is a major focus in our governance with a Technology Business Incubator in each Indian Campus that have nurtured around 75 start-ups. 
  • Recent studies have identified BITS at #3 in India in terms of number of start-ups.

 Technology Transfer @ BITS Pilani 

  • Recently, a dedicated Technology Transfer Office (TTO) was created for improving IP prospects and technology commercialisation. 
  • The technology transfer office is spearheaded by a full time Technology Transfer Officer.

PhD Scholars  

  • Doctoral student enrolment has grown at a CAGR of over 20% in the last 5 yrs, with current strength being 1752 - 42.3% of which are female scholars.
  • Across the three Indian campuses, the Institute fellowship today supports around 58% of the PhD students.

External Funding

  • New external research grant of Rs. 61.8 cr was received in FY22. 
  • The 5-year average annual grant increased by 306% from Rs. 18.5 Cr/yr (FY13-17) to Rs. 75.1 Cr/yr (FY18-21). In 2021, 40 patent applications were filed, highest ever in a year, and 11 patents were granted.

Publications

  • The research publication metrics continue to improve vigorously in terms of both quality and quantity. 
  • Annual no. of publications has grown with a CAGR of 23% since 2017 and the CAGR for annual number of citations is nearly 35%. 
  • The current Scopus h-index is 138, with an annual citations/paper of 25 in 2021 which compares favourably with the other contemporaries
  • In 2021, 41% of the articles were published in Scimago SJR Q1 Journals and nearly 23% in Q2 Journals. 
  • Of our indexed publications, over 33% has at least one international co-author, and over 41% has at least one national co-author - an indication of the impact of our quality collaborations in India and outside.
  • Internationally co-authored publications have grown at a CAGR of nearly 28% since 2017. 
  • The average impact factor continues to rise with a current value of 3.91.
