Overview

The Department of Physics at BITS Pilani, K. K. Birla Goa Campus currently has fifteen faculty members whose research interest spans experimental and theoretical aspects of condensed matter physics, optics, spectroscopy, quantum computation, non-linear dynamics and chaos, statistical mechanics, field theory, nuclear physics, high energy physics and astrophysics. The department offers a four year M.Sc. (Hons.) program with plus two students as input and the admissions are made based on the BITSAT exam score. We also offer a Ph.D program in physics which is open to students with an M. Sc. Degree.

Activities

  • Institute Development and infrastructure: Apart from building state-of-the art laboratories for physics, we also maintain the campus LMS photon, which runs on the open source Moodle LMS. It currently supports 200 odd courses running across disciplines on the Goa Campus.
  • Courses: We offer programs leading to MSc (hons) and PhD in  Physics. We also  run  basic physics courses and laboratories for undergraduate engineering students, apart from offering multi-discipline electives.
  • Conferences and Schools
    • "SERC Preparatory school in Theoretical High Energy Physics(THEP), 2010", 20th Oct. to 15th Nov. 2010.

News and Views

  • Muons over take photons?

Latest experiments reveal the possibility of light not being the fastest thing around. If established to be correct, the finding from the OPERA experiment could lead to rewriting of modern physical theories.
