Nikhil Tambe is an Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at BITS Pilani – Hyderabad campus.
He is also the Chief Technology Officer for the Energy Consortium, IIT Madras, where he oversees development of industry-academia collaborations with a strategic focus on technologies that will enable the energy transition towards a low carbon future. Nikhil is Chair for the Energy Committee at the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industries (SICCI).
Previously, he served as country director for The Ohio State University’s India Gateway Office and helped build strategic engagement for the university in India with prominent industry, academia and government partners.
Prior to that he has worked with Eaton’s Corporate Research & Technology and GE Global Research, over a combined 13 year span driving technology & innovation portfolios on energy generation equipment and energy management solutions.
He holds 12 issued US & World patents and a trade secret all aggregated from R&D work that included developing advanced drivetrains for 1.5 MW wind turbines, Tier 4 emission compliant locomotive engines, advanced lubricant additives and specifications for gas turbines, actuation mechanisms for medium duty truck powertrain and hydraulics pumps and motors. He is a recipient of two patent awards at GE. He has 16 international peer reviewed journal publications, including in Royal Society’s Philosophical Transactions on Magnetics, and multiple handbook chapters, including Springer Handbook of Nanotechnology. He has been recognized as the most cited researcher by the Institute of Physics. His research on nanoscale friction mapping was featured by Nature Materials.
Nikhil earned his PhD and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering at The Ohio State University. He has a certification in Innovation Strategy from the Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth and Policy Design & Delivery from Harvard Kennedy School.
