- Step Up Your Potential 2.0
The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering hosted a Step Up Your Potential 2.0 workshop for students in Grades 9–12 on June 10, 2023. A huge number of students from various schools across the UAE participated in this free workshop. Our director, Prof. Srinivasan Madapusi, inaugurated the workshop, which was organized and convened by Dr. R. Swarnalatha, Deputy HoD. A brief introduction of the department was provided by Dr. V. Kalaichelvi, HoD.
During session 1, the students had the opportunity to experience thoughtfully conceptualized two hands-on events: an automatic lightening system using LDR and working with single-phase transformers. During session 2, EEE’s techno booth provided the students with a live demonstration of 3D printers, AC/DC motors and generators, satellite communication devices, transducers, robots, and drones. The practical applications and instructional strategies were much valued by the attendees.
Our professors, Dr. Sunil Thomas, Dr. Shazia Hasan, Dr. R. Swarnalatha, Dr. V. Kalaichelvi, Dr. Vilas Gaidhane, and Dr. Abdul Rajak, led both sessions with assistance from our lab instructors, Mr. Hidayathulla, Mr. Chelladurai, and Mr. Ashwani. Special thanks to Sulaiman, Irfaan, Gopika, Nausheen, Bhavadev, Anas Dalvi, Shilpa Kumar, Sanchit, and Anjali, the student volunteers.

- IoT based Smart Surveillance Camera with Face Detection
The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering hosted an IoT-based smart surveillance camera with face detection workshop for students in Grades 9–12 on June 17, 2023. A huge number of students from various schools across the UAE participated in this free workshop. Prof. Srinivasan Madapusi, our director, gave the workshop's inaugural address. Dr. R. Swarnalatha, Deputy HoD, organized and convened the workshop, and Dr. V. Kalaichelvi, the Head of Department, gave a quick overview of the department.
The event was started and led by Dr. Nilesh Goel with an introduction to the components, which was followed by hands-on practice on IoT-based smart surveillance cameras with face detection with several applications. Participants were very grateful for the real-world applications and instructional strategies. Our Professors, Dr. Jagadish Nayak, Dr. T G Thomas, Dr. Vilas Gaidhane, Dr. M B Srinivas, and Dr. Gomathi Bhavani with support from our lab instructors Mr. Hidayathulla, Mr. Chelladurai, and Mr. Ashwani helped the participants in troubleshooting and better understanding of concepts. The student volunteers, Bhavadev, Shilpa, and Sanchit deserve special recognition. Having young people with an interest in STEM was exciting. Below are a few pictures from the workshop:
"IoT workshop" for students in grades 10–12
The Department of Electrical and
Electronics Engineering hosted an Internet of Things workshop for students in
Grades 9 to 12, on January 7, 2023, to learn about the wonders and potential of
IoT. Students from various schools across the UAE
participated in this free workshop. Our director, Prof. Srinivasan Madapusi,
addressed the workshop through online. Dr. R. Swarnalatha, Deputy HoD had
organised and convened this workshop. A brief introduction of the department
was provided by HoD, Dr. V. Kalaichelvi.
The event began with an
introduction to the components, which was followed by hands-on practice
building an IoT-based home automation system. All participants received a free
session. The participants were very appreciative of the practical applications
and teaching methodologies.
The sessions were led by our professors Dr.
Jagadish Nayak, Dr. Vilas Gaidhane, and Dr. Abdul Rajak with support from our
lab instructors Mr. Hidayathulla, Mr. Chelladurai, and Mr. Ashwani. The student
volunteers Sulaiman, Irfaan, Gopika, Nausheen, Bhavadev, Sanchit, and Anjali
deserve special recognition.
Event by SWE : HighQ
Under the guidance of Dr R Swarnalatha, SWE (Society of Women Engineers) committee members hosted an ULTIMATE TRIVIA competition called “HighQ” that challenged IQ and general knowledge on October 23, 2023. The team that got the maximum number of correct answers out of 25 questions won the winner's certificate and Amazon Gift Voucher. The winners are Vinanti -2021A9PS0069U & Keerthana -2021A9PS0114U.
Event by WIE
Under the guidance of Dr R Swarnalatha, in the spirit of unity and support, WIE(Women in Engineering) hosted an event to battle breast cancer on October 25, 2023. It was a special event to raise awareness and show our solidarity with those affected by this important cause. There were two games: Ribbon Run and Archery. Students had actively participated and had great fun.
AOEE ‘s Event : "Smart System Mobility and AI"
Dr.Shazia conducted "Smart System Mobility and AI " event, held on October 24th, 2023, via a Teams meeting, offered an insightful and educational experience to all participants.AOEE helped Dr.Shazia to conduct it. The event featured Subhasis Pradhan, an AI/ML Specialist from Jenoptik, who shared valuable information about how the company provides innovative solutions for civil security and supports law enforcement as few of the examples.
GUEST LECTURE
Dr. R Swarnalatha had organized a guest lecture for the Medical Instrumentation elective students. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Rajyashree N. Kutty, General Surgeon, Barakath Alnoor Clinic, Oman, on October 4, 2023, with the theme "Medicine Meets Engineering”. The doctor emphasized enhancement through image processing. The talk was thought-provoking and enlightening for both the students and the faculty.
SWE EVENT: PUZZLEX
SWE (Society of Women Engineers) had organized an event called PUZZLEX on October 3, 2023. This event promises an exciting journey of mind-boggling puzzles and entertaining games where students can showcase their skills, team up with fellow enthusiasts, and stand a chance to win amazing prizes!
AOEE’s EVENT: Electro-Fest
"Electro-Fest," hosted on October 4th, 2023, in G34 at BITS Pilani Dubai Campus, was a captivating and interdisciplinary event organized by the Association of Electronic Engineers. This event was designed to be an electrifying electrical fair where participants from various academic disciplines could come together to enjoy a day of innovative games and activities, all of which had their roots in electrical and electronic subjects.
The festival featured a unique blend of games that drew inspiration from electrical concepts. These games included challenges based on logic gates, brain-teasing Caesar ciphers, hands-on circuit building activities, and a playful take on the classic board game "Snakes and Ladders" with a delightful twist—electrical questions added to the mix.
Participants from diverse academic backgrounds were invited to join in the fun, creating a vibrant and diverse atmosphere. Despite their differing fields of study, everyone who took part found the games to be both engaging and educational. The games were expertly crafted to bridge the gap between electrical concepts and enjoyable, interactive experiences.
"Electro-Fest" exemplified the Association of Electronic Engineers' dedication to promoting learning and collaboration among students from various disciplines. It fostered a spirit of camaraderie and problem-solving, reinforcing the idea that electrical and electronic concepts can be both enjoyable and educational.
AOEE‘s Event : "SCADA Workshop"
Dr.Vilas Ghaidane arranged "SCADA Workshop" held on October 11th, 2023, in Instrumentation Lab 303 at BITS Pilani Dubai Campus, marked another significant milestone as the second industrial workshop organized by the Association of Electronic Engineers (AoEE). Focused on SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) software, this event aimed to bridge the gap between university learning and the practical requirements of the industry.
The workshop featured Mr. Meshak Goshal, a distinguished alumnus of BPDC, who currently works at Weidmuller. Mr. Goshal shared his extensive knowledge and insights about SCADA software, emphasizing its vital role in industrial control and automation systems. His talk provided an in-depth understanding of SCADA's applications and importance in modern industries.
One of the highlights of the workshop was the hands-on experience provided to the students. Mr. Goshal brought along a hardware kit, enabling participants to gain practical experience with SCADA software. This practical exposure was invaluable as it allowed students to apply their theoretical knowledge in a real-world context, promoting experiential learning.
The "SCADA Workshop" was a joint effort between the Electrical and Chemical Departments, attracting students from both disciplines. This collaboration added a dynamic element to the event and allowed students to gain interdisciplinary insights into the applications of SCADA software.
The event achieved its primary goal of connecting students with an industry expert and equipping them with hands-on experience. It also provided a valuable networking opportunity for students to interact with a successful alumnus and explore potential career paths in the field of industrial automation and control systems.
In conclusion, the "SCADA Workshop" was a resounding success, thanks to the efforts of AoEE and the expertise of Mr. Meshak Goshal. It equipped students with practical skills and knowledge, preparing them for the demands of the professional world. The event served as a prime example of how academia and industry can collaborate to enrich the educational experience of students, bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications.
Team IFOR workshop: Introduction to RObotics
On October 9, 2023, Team IFOR under the guidance of Dr.V.Kalaichelvi held their second workshop in LAB 332 from 2P.M to 3.30P.M GST. We were privileged to host Dr. Abhilasha Singh as our Resource Person and she completed her Ph.D in the field of Robotics and Computer Vision from EEE deparment,BPDC. Currently, she is pursuing her Postdoc at RIT Dubai. The hands-on workshop started with basics of ROS, then publisher, subscriber and Turtlebotsim. Such workshops provide invaluable opportunities for knowledge sharing and learning from distinguished experts in the field.
"Ohm Sweet Ohm" Event Conducted by AOEE
The "Ohm Sweet Ohm" event, held on September 13th, 2023, at the BITS Pilani Dubai Campus, marked the exciting kickoff of the academic year 2023–24 for the Department of Electrical Engineering. Organized by the Association of Electronic Engineers (AOEE), this event served as an engaging icebreaker, bringing together students from different academic years for an afternoon of fun and camaraderie.
The event was skillfully hosted by AOEE technical event team, in collaboration with Sanchit, Anas, and Bhavadev. To foster a sense of unity among the students, four teams were formed, each comprising four members with representation from the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years.
A series of four exciting games were organized, with each game offering the winning team 30 points. These games included a challenging memory game, a mind-bending puzzle-solving contest, a musical chairs variation with a delightful twist, and the thrilling balloon race. These activities not only encouraged teamwork but also tested the participants' mental agility and physical prowess.
Amidst the competitive spirit, participants were treated to snacks to replenish their energy. Refreshing juices and delicious croissants were provided, allowing everyone to recharge and continue enjoying the event.
In summary ,the "Ohm Sweet Ohm" event was a resounding success, providing students with a memorable and enjoyable experience. It not only helped break the ice among students but also emphasized the importance of collaboration and friendly competition within the electrical engineering department. The event's enthusiastic participation and positive energy reflected the strong sense of community within the department, setting the stage for an exciting and productive academic year ahead.
"Recharge and Reconnect" Event Conducted by AOEE
"Recharge and Reconnect," the inaugural alumni meet for the Electrical Engineering Department, took place on September 14th, 2023, at the DSP Lab in BITS Pilani Dubai Campus (BPDC). This event primarily catered to the 3rd and 4th-year students.
The guest speaker for the event was Shwetha Sreejith, an alumna from the 2020 batch. Shwetha shared valuable insights into her educational and professional journey. She pursued her bachelor's degree at BITS Dubai and went on to complete her master's at the University College London in Telecommunications. Currently, she works as a 5G Wireless Researcher at Lenovo in Germany.
During her brief yet informative talk, Shwetha emphasized the importance of strategic planning when it comes to pursuing higher studies and finding job opportunities abroad. She highlighted the significance of building strong relationships with professors and leveraging the knowledge gained during master's programs to secure promising career prospects.
Shwetha's experiences and advice resonated with the attending students, shedding light on the potential pathways available to them after completing their electrical engineering degrees. Her success story served as an inspiration and a source of motivation for the aspiring engineers in the room.
"Recharge and Reconnect" served as a meaningful platform for students to connect with an accomplished alumna, gaining insights into potential career paths. It was a valuable event that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the students as they embark on their academic and professional journeys.
Workshop Activities from Team IFOR
Team IFOR conducted their first workshop of the semester, focusing on the fundamentals of computer vision and robotics utilizing OpenCV and Python under the guidance of Dr.V.Kalaichelvi. During this workshop, students received a comprehensive introduction to key concepts in the realm of computer vision, including image manipulation, color segmentation, Canny edge detection, contour identification, and even video manipulation. The event proved to be highly successful, drawing an impressive turnout of over 40 attendees. It took place on September 26th, 2023, during the 7th and 8th hours. Notably, this workshop was open to all and included complimentary snacks for participants.
LabVIEW Workshop
Dr. Kalaichelvi arranged workshop on "Basics of LabVIEW and its application in an Industrial Environment held on September 27th, 2023, in the Instrumentation Lab at BITS Pilani Dubai Campus, marking a significant milestone as the first industrial workshop. This event was organized by the Association of Electronic Engineers (AoEE). Focused on LabVIEW software, this event aimed to bridge the gap between university learning and the practical requirements of the industry. The logistic arrangements and installation of software were taken care of by all EEE Lab instructors.
The workshop featured Mr. Ramis Ali, an expert from Digital Automation Technology, as the guest speaker. Mr. Ali delivered an enlightening and informative talk on LabVIEW software, shedding light on its significance in the industrial landscape. He highlighted how LabVIEW plays a crucial role in automation and control systems, emphasizing its relevance in various industries.
One of the key highlights of the workshop was the hands-on experience provided to the students. Mr. Ali brought along a hardware kit, allowing participants to get their hands dirty and gain practical insights into LabVIEW software.
The event not only provided a platform for learning but also served as an excellent networking opportunity for students interested in industrial automation and instrumentation. It encouraged them to engage with an industry expert, ask questions, and seek guidance on potential career paths.
In conclusion, the "LabVIEW Workshop" was a resounding success, thanks to the efforts of AoEE and the expertise of Mr. Ramis Ali. It provided students with a unique learning experience and a glimpse into the industrial applications of LabVIEW. This event has set a promising precedent for future industrial workshops aimed at preparing students for the challenges and opportunities in the professional world.
WIE’s ‘Bake You Happy’
“Bake You Happy" was a delightful event organized by WIE (Women in Engineering) that took place on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, in the vibrant vending machine area of our campus. The aroma of freshly baked treats like cupcakes and donuts filled the air, enticing students and faculty alike to indulge in sweet delights. What made this event truly special was the element of fun dares that students were encouraged to participate in, adding an exciting and interactive twist to the traditional bake sale. It was a day that left everyone with smiles and hearts full of sugary happiness.
Activity by IEEE
IoT Workshop: Hands-on Raspberry Pi
On 21st September 2023, IEEE student chapter of BPDC hosted a successful workshop taking participants through a guided hands-on demonstration on how to operate the camera module on Raspberry Pi. Participants were each given a Raspberry Pi with a detachable camera component. The session covered the fundamentals of working on it, before heading to the specifics of the camera module.
Both beginners and seasoned developers gradually familiarized with the code. Initially, the workshop focused on clicking photos using camera modules, (and snapping some selfies!) The next section focused on video recording. Finally, participants learned how to apply or rather code filters on snapped photos.
The participants were highly engaged and thoroughly enjoyed the workshop. Volunteers were readily available to assist with any questions or concerns, ensuring a smooth learning experience. As a delightful bonus, participants were treated to popcorn!
GUEST LECTURE
Dr R Swarnalatha had organised a Guest Lecture by Mr. Bharat Kamath, Product Manager, Abbott Laboratories GmbH, UAE on 13th April 2022. Topic: “Advancement in Diagnostic Blood Testing” and the product Demo is about Abbott i-STAT Point of Care analyzer.
The Guest Lecture was focused mainly on the advancements in diagnostic blood testing and point of care. The history behind diagnostic testing and it was compared to the current standard of diagnosis. Then a demo of a blood testing analyzer was shown. This data would be available within 2-3 minutes and the medic can give the necessary treatment much faster than traditional methods.
SITE VISIT
Dr R Swarnalatha had organised a Site visit for the Medical Instrumentation students has been arranged to Biomedical Engineering unit of Rashid Hospital, UAE on 14th April 2022.
During the visit to the biomedical department at Rashid Hospital, students got the opportunity to check out several important biomedical instruments and get an insight into their practical working. Students got hands on experience with defibrillators, ventilators, ECG machines, Syringe pumps, docking equipment and the Vital checking machines for NIBP which they learnt theoretically in the classroom
